WSSL 2015 Final: Highgate Win a Thriller

Julian Black reports:

Tuesday saw the Finals and 3rd/4th playoff of the Westway 2015 Summer Superleague, and thus the culmination of two months of competition.

The two sides were Highgate and Aston House and a match of more epic proportions and standard would be hard to imagine, with the two teams extremely closely matched. In the first round, Jonny Ho and Matt Kovar for Highgate triumphed over Laurie Brock and Carl Rennie 15 - 12 and Nick Shaw and Alex Yusaf for Aston House were just stronger than Joe Marks and Abs Bhattacharya, winning their match 15-13, taking the score to 1-1 in games and setting the stage for what was clearly going to be a nailbiter.

The second round, again extremely close and hard-fought, was the exact reverse of the first round in terms of points, as AH took one game 15-12, and Highgate won one 15-13, leaving the match 2-2 with no points difference between the two sides.

In the end, despite both teams taking one game apiece in the final round, it was Highgate that won the day, winning their match 15-8 whilst AH took theirs 15-14, meaning that the points difference went in favour of Highgate.

This was definitely the finest display of Fives of this year’s Superleague, with an extremely high standard maintained throughout, and that the whole fixture lasted three hours in total is some indication of how tight it was. A wonderful match, and congratulations to Highgate on their first Superleague title!

The 3rd/4th playoff was a slightly less intense matter, though no less well fought, with the Aston House second team of Gareth Hoskins, Spencer Chapman, Justin Shaw and Harriet Asquith winning 4-2 over the EFA team of Julian Black, Phil Roper, Ashley Lumbard and Natalie Lilienthal.

The Golden Glove Award for most shots in the hole went to Jonny Ho, whilst Joe Marks picked up the Highest Point Scorer Award.

As the sun sets on another Superleague, I would like to thank Kate Austin, Mikael Kiviniemi and Caz Chew at Westway for their help and support throughout the tournament, and Gareth Hoskins, Paul Bowden, Freddie Rowe and Richard Black for their support behind the scenes.
