An Invitation To Play Fives In Hamburg

From Fion Pellacini

14/10/19: Dear Fives players,

I would like to invite you to come and have some great Eton Fives matches in Hamburg, Germany!

I am happy to announce that we have achieved the construction of a temporary but functional Eton Fives court “sculpture” in southern Hamburg, with the support of John Reynolds and other members of the Fives community. It’s located in the Hamburg-Harburg train station, above track 3&4, where it is part of an art exhibition which runs until November 10th.

There will be a series of workshops for German beginners, which is free to everyone, from Monday, October 28th until Friday, November 1st, from 7pm onwards each evening, with a final tournament for anybody who wants to take part on Saturday, November 2nd.

The workshops will be hosted by Hamburg-based fives player Curt Schmitt, who learned his fives in Switzerland and is now a teacher based in Hamburg.

We would be delighted to welcome as many English players as possible to the court – which is made mostly out of ply- and plaster board – to take part in games with newcomers. Perhaps we could see this as a reach-out to Britain at a time when, from our point of view, Great Britain seems to be drifting away from the rest of the European Continent.

There are many possibilities to join in, either
- playing on the court at any stage by appointment,
- or taking part in the workshops, each evening of the workshop week, October 28-November 1
- or playing in the tournament on Saturday, November 2.
We are happy about every participant, temporarily or continuously joining the workshop, or visitors who are coming for a flying visit!

Location: The court is located at Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Hannoversche Str. 85, über Gleis 3 & 4, 21079 Hamburg

Travel:
At the time of writing, return flights from London to Hamburg for that week are as low as £43.

The average journey time by train between Hamburg Airport and Hamburg-Harburg is 43 minutes, with around 110 trains per day. There is one change necessary.
