Self and Cooley take the 2010/11 Turnbull

The final of the Turnbull Trophy took place at Eton yesterday, with Chris Self and Seb Cooley of St.Olave's defeating Anthony Theodossi and Steve Wiggill of Berkhamsted in the final 12-4, 12-8, 14-13.

This year's competition was held at Eton College alongside the Graham Turnbull Trophy. This year we had a massive entry of 46 players from Ipswich, Berkhamsted, Westway, St. Olave's and King Edward's Birmingham.

Jan 2011: Antonia Bruch Memorial Match

On October 27th 2009, Antonia Bruch sadly passed away from Meningitis. Antonia had just left Highgate School and started at Oxford University. Not only was she a good friend but a Fives team mate and one of her goals in life, as well as becoming Prime Minister, was to make Fives an Olympic sport.

2010/11 Turnbull Trophy

This event had a fantastic turnout with 33 pairs (one of our highest ever entries) from ten different schools: Aldenham, Berkhamsted, Emanuel, Charterhouse, St Olave's, Mill Hill, Ipswich, KES, Lancing College and Wolverhampton. All the pairs were split into 8 pools of 4/5 pairs where each pool match was 20 minutes long and every one was against the clock.

Graves Cup 2011: Here We Go Again...

The 2011 edition of the Graves Cup was held over the weekend of 8th/9th January, with Seb Cooley and Cameron Lyle setting a record for having held the trophy for the shortest time ever, the previous edition having taken place less than three months earlier.

2010 EFA Universities: A higher degree of success

The 2010 Universities Championships took place at Eton on Saturday 13th November, with a record 34 pairs representing 17 different universities in a feast of Fives. Oxford and Cambridge - the only two universities with their own courts and clubs - provided 9 pairs apiece, but pairs from all over the country made an enormous effort to get to Eton with players taking part from Durham, Newcastle, Nottingham, Manchester, Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, Exeter, Oxford Brookes, Brunel, King's, Imperial, UCL, Queen Mary's and City University.

Jan 2011: Cross Code New Year Fives-fest in Marlborough

Fives history was made on Sunday Jan 2nd 2011, as North Oxford Eton Fives Club took on Marlborough Town Rugby Fives Club in a cross-code New Year Fives challenge. Marlborough is lucky enough to have 4 Rugby Fives courts and 2 Eton Fives courts side by side and 10 players from each club enjoyed an evening of mix and match doubles matches, switching effortlessly (in some cases anyway) from the three wall game to the four wall code.

Nov 2010: EFA Ladies hit the Highgate high notes

The newly formed EFA Ladies team played their first ever match on Sunday and got their season off to a flying start with a fantastic eight pair fixture against Highgate School at Highgate. Run by Kerry White and Dominique Redmond, the EFA Ladies will be playing a series of fixtures against clubs and schools throughout the season to provide increased playing opportunities for everyone involved in the vibrant and growing Ladies Fives scene. For the record, a very strong EFA team won the match 7-1; you can see the EFA team by clicking on the thumbnail.

Toop and Wiseman win the 2010 London

Matthew Wiseman and James Toop retained their London Tournament in fine style at Eton yesterday, defeating fellow Olavians Seb Cooley and Peter Cohen in a high quality, high intensity and high speed final 12-8, 12-4, 13-12. James, by his own admission, was not quite playing at his best as he was still adjusting back to the demands of the Eton game having retained his Rugby Fives singles title the previous week.

Nov 2010: Black and Knight for the EFCT

Rodney Knight recently chaired and hosted the 50th Eton Fives Charitable Trust meeting at the Hawks' Club in Cambridge. In recognition of his 10 year tenure as Chairman, Dale Vargas, on behalf of the trustees, presented Rodney with a salver and framed photograph of him in action on the Torry Hill court. At the conclusion of business the baton of chairmanship was passed to Richard Black, fellow Trustee and a Vice President of the Eton Fives Association.
