Martin Lindsay 1944-2025

Graham Pulsford writes:

19/07/25: Martin was a powerful left-hander who learned his fives at Charterhouse. He was a larger-than-life character who made his mark on the courts, in apres-fives socialising and as an enthusiastic fives organiser.

He was the ideal club player: reliable, regularly available, courteous, good standard of play, genial, gregarious and kind. Martin was a regular member of the Hill EFC during its five-year existence and then played at the Heath at Aldenham for the rest of his playing career where he was the Fixture Secretary for over 20 years and Club President for a further 10 years.

His playing career for the Heath alone exceeded 650 games and he will have visited the Three Horseshoes and the Round Bush almost as many times. And Martin knew his way around a fives court – he played for the Rest of the World team in the 1980s, led Buckinghamshire through the 1980s and 90s, was in the Heath League Division 2 winning team of 1991 (mixing in with Jim Fredenham, Phil Marsh, Gavin Turner, Tony Bundy, Robin Rumsam and a young Paul Kendall). He won the Heath Tournament in 1992, 2002 and 2005 whilst reaching a further 3 finals.

Illness forced Martin to stop playing fives but he still attended all our ladder competition evenings, enjoying a post-game curry with the players and presenting the Phil Marsh trophy to the winner.

Our condolences to his family, including his fives playing son, Jonathan.

Martin will be missed by all who knew him.
