2001 EFA Trophy
Ed Taylor reports:
Six sides were drawn up for this year's contest - a nice number. Two round robin pools of three, allowing proper three game matches...
2000/01 Alan Barber Cup
Ed Taylor reports:
A straight seeded knockout over four gruelling encounters... no round-robins, no second chances, no prisoners. One slip up and you're just another statistic on the EFA website. Fighting for the honour of their club, sweat would pour and blood would be spilt (and no doubt the odd dubious let requested)....it's all out war in the quest to win that most desirable Trophy...the Holy Grail of Club Fives...the Alan Barber Cup!
2001 Varsity Match
Rodney Knight reports:
'Blitzspiel' by Cambridge overturns favourites!
Three games of vividly aggressive Fives by the light blue first pair and strong supporting performances in the other two courts overturned last year's Oxford supremacy and brought an overwhelming 3-0 victory to Cambridge on a fine cold day at Eton.
2001 Williams Cup
2001 Northern Tournament
Andrew Mitchell reports:
As usual, late entries and even later withdrawals lead to several last minute drafts and redrafts of draws in both competitions, but unusually prompt arrival by the majority of entrants meant that play progressed reasonably quickly. Sunny skies and calm conditions meant that spectating was a relatively comfortable experience, at least until sunset.
2001 Ipswich Tournament
Tim Fletcher reports:
Once again in an attempt to fend off the winter blues and to work off the Christmas excesses many players - Old Ipswichians, School pupils, staff and guests - entered the infamous 'Ipswich Handicap'.
2000/01 County Championships
Anthony Crump reports:
Six Counties participated - Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Middlesex, Sussex and Warwickshire.
2000 London Tournament
Sanjaya Ranasinghe reports:
For the fourth year running, the London Tournament at Highgate attracted roughly sixty players. There were welcomed newcomers from Lancing School and Emanuel School.
Geoffrey Bolt (1923-2000)
Geoffrey Bolt as Master-in-Charge of Fives at Aldenham and latterly, Cranleigh, will be remembered as an outstanding coach. He brought out the maximum talent in his players to put Aldenham on the map by winning the Public Schools Competition five times between 1954 and 1961. He was also a member of the EFA Committee and a Jester, and a generous donation has been left for the benefit of both bodies.
2000 Universities Tournament
James Toop reports:
The first year of the new British Universities Eton Fives Championships saw ten pairs from four different universities, Cambridge, Loughborough, Oxford and Warwick, compete at King Edward's School, Birmingham on Saturday 18th November. The entry would have been larger had Nottingham, Durham, Bristol UWE and London not had to withdraw the week before, through injury.
