National Schools' Championships: Day Six Round Up
Historic Win For Cranleigh
23/03/24: The final day of competition at Repton saw a first ever senior tournament win for Cranleigh, who won the U18 Girls title in superb style.
Charlotte Barr and Matilda Fincken (remarkably still a pupil at Cranleigh Prep) defeated all of the top Shrewsbury pairs during the course of the day, culminating in a dominating 3-0 win in the final over Shrewsbury 2 (last year's winner Esther Hurford & U16 Emily Clark. Charlotte's cut returning, volleying and movement around the court had stood out all day but this was very much not a solo victory as her younger partner grew into the tournament during the day, displaying a maturity of game well beyond her years, with a weight of shot and line into the buttress that consistently asked questions that her opponents were unable to answer. This was a first ever victory for Cranleigh at U18 level - boys and girls - in the history of the competition and fitting reward for the years of hard work put into Cranleigh Fives by coach Mark Halstead.
There was plenty of action elsewhere on the final day, with Shrewsbury also in the thick of it in the U14 novices competition. The top two pairs defeated QEB and Harrow in their morning semi-finals before producing a thrilling final that could have gone either way, Pair 1 just doing enough to claim the trophy.
The Boys and Girls Festival competitions also took place, with a wide range of schools entered - Zuoz, Repton, QEB, Aldenham, Shrewsbury, Ipswich and St.Bees, all the way down from the world's most northerly courts in Cumbria. Zuoz took home the Girls title with a win over Repton in the final, while the Zuoz boys just missed out on the double, their top pair losing to Aldenham 1 in the final match of the championships.
This has been a fantastic week of Fives - the EFA would like to thank Repton School (especially David Exley and Karen Hird) for being superb first time hosts, Advanta Wealth for their sponsorship, Charlotta & Seb Cooley for a hugely successful orgnisational debut and all of their helpers - Mark Williams, Nigel Cox, Callum Yates, Zara Knowles and Henry Barton Smith - for doing a sterling job all week.
