National Schools' Championships Day Six: Wins for Shrewsbury, Harrow, Zuoz and St.Bees
21/03/26: The final day of the 2026 National Schools' Championships in association with Advanta Wealth at Repton yesterday saw Shrewsbury win the Girls Open and first trophies of the week for Harrow, Zuoz and St.Bees.
The Girls Open only had a small entry this year but the standard was high; the top two seeds - Repton 1 and Shrewsbury 1 - have been the top two pairs on the circuit this year and have had some close battles already. They faced each other again in the final having both made it through the rounds without too many alarms. Sienna Earles & Millie Parry of Shrewsbury settled quickly and won the first game to 5. The early stages of the second game were closer but one strong returning hand took the Shrewsbury pair from 6-7 to 11-7, within a point of a 2-0 lead. The next 20 minutes or so were the best Fives of the match and also the ultimately decisive passage of play. Bri Hansen-Hoare & Meghna Rajan of Repton didn't panic and settled into an excellent gameball cutting rhythm; the Shrewsbury pair had a couple of half chances but were unable to take them and although the Repton pair initially struggled to get the points back that they needed, eventually they broke through and levelled the game at 11-11. They then went 12-11 up before Shrewsbury hit back to go 13-12 ahead but again the Repton girls cut them down before getting to 13-13 and finally getting a chance at gameball themselves. They couldn't convert it, however, and - having cut beautifully and saved so many game points - a Repton cut finally and slightly anticlimactically flew out the back to give the Shrewsbury girls the game 14-13. Bri & Meghna continued to play well in the third game, but with the confidence of a 2-0 lead behind them, Sienna & Millie were able to relax and play their best Fives, winning the third to 7 to take a deserved win, a first outright victory at this level for Shrewsbury since 2023. Despite their disappointment at not winning, Repton can take great pride in their performance, a first appearance in a senior open final for a Repton pair since 1976.
Elsewhere on the final day there was a first victory of the week for Harrow, whose hugely talented U14 pair - already semi-finalists in the main U14 competition against much more experienced pairs - dominated the U14 beginners competition, comfortably seeing off challenges from QE Barnet in the semis and Shrewsbury in the final. Definitely a pair to watch out for in the next few years.
Also on the final day were the Boys and Girls Festival competitions, an opportunity for the less experienced and non-elite players to have an enjoyable day of Fives. Zuoz retained the boys trophy with a strong pair (a shame that travel logistics meant they didn't get a chance to test themselves in the main open competition) while the girls festival was won by St.Bees 2, who showed just how much it is possible for relatively inexperienced players to improve during the course of one day, losing an early group match to Mill Hill then having to come through the repechage against their own first pair, before defeating Shrewsbury in a tense semi-final and then denying Zuoz a festival double with a terrific performance in the final. This was a first ever trophy at the National Schools' Championships for St.Bees and a fantastic reward for the brilliant work that Laurence Gribble and Brad Simpson have been doing with the school's Fives programme in recent years. Maybe it will be just the first of many?
The Schools' Championships are always a huge logistical undertaking and the EFA would like to thank all of those who put in a huge amount of time and effort to make it happen - David Exley, Karen Hird and everyone at Repton for doing such a terrific hosting job, Seb and Charlotta Cooley for masterminding the whole operation and their team of helpers - Natalie Lilienthal, Mark Williams, Callum Yates, Sam Cook and Henry Barton-Smith - who kept everything running smoothly. As always, our thanks also go to our sponsors, Advanta Wealth, for their support.
