2001 Veterans Tournament

Peter Knowles reports:

The seventeenth Over 40s Tournament was contested for the first time for silverware with Anne Shortland-Jones kindly presenting the Cup in memory of Martin, who won the inaugural tournament in 1985. In partnership with Jimmy Biggs, Martin won this tournament on four occasions. It was good to see entries back to double figures after last year's disappointment, with Martin Lindsay's seventeenth appearance maintaining his perfect record.

The following entered:

I.A.N. Leeming and S. Plummer

P.V. Boughton and S.A. Woolfries

R.S.R. Pattison and G.D. Stringer

A.P.W. Bishop and J Rogers

G.B. Bates and M. Lindsay

P.J. Rodwell and J.G. Tolchard

J.A. Caudle and P.J. Knowles

N.J. Margerison and J.G.M. Pulsford

R.A. Dennis and J.N. Fredenham

P. Scholey and J.H.L. Seelig

Each pair played four rounds of one game up to fifteen points and the two pairs with the best records then contested the final. In the first round the closest game saw Andrew Bishop and J Rogers beat Gordon Stringer and Ronald Pattison 15-12 and in the second round Richard Dennis and James Fredenham beat Peter Rodwell and Jeff Tolchard by the same score. After two rounds there were only three unbeaten pairs. Of these, Richard Dennis and James Fredenham just lost out 15-14 in the third round to John Caudle and Peter Knowles, the closest game of the day. The other two pairs, Graham Pulsford and Neil Margerison, and Peter Boughton and Simon Woolfries won their third and fourth round matches, thus qualifying for the final.

Both pairs had won the tournament previously and it was a particularly good effort for Peter and Simon to reach their first final since 1997. On this occasion, however, the holders, Graham and Neil, proved the stronger and eventually wore down Peter and Simon with their greater consistency, winning by15-7 to complete a hat-trick of tournament wins.

After an introduction from Jimmy Biggs, Anne Shortland-Jones presented the Cup to the Our thanks to Eton College for the use of their facilities and finally our thanks to Anne for donating and presenting the trophy and also to Anne and Jimmy for their support during the afternoon.
