This event was a one-off! Organised over one year ahead of time, Julian Pinner entered for the wrong year! The aim was to unite, in the year of the Millennium, players from both codes of Fives, into a friendly weekend event in which everyone enjoyed and shared each other's code of Fives.

2000 Engadin Challenge

The fifth Engadin Challenge Cup took place from 14th-17th September 2000. The winners were Marc Mettler and Sebastian Galperti (Zuoz Club), who beat Chris Tanner and Richard Dennis (Zuoz Club/Old Berkhamstedian) in a highly dramatic final. Over sixty Fives players from the Lyceum, the Zuoz Club and twenty guests from England took part.

Some had thought that it was mighty ambitious trying to organise an Eton Fives tour to Zuoz, Switzerland, for a long weekend. Curt Schmitt's expertise in so many languages, however, and his success in arranging free accommodation , made it all possible in the end.

2000 Under 25 Tournament

With temperatures hovering around zero 12 pairs braved the cold and icy roads to gather at Eton for the Year 2000 Under 25's National Championships on Sunday 19th December. It was frustrating to see as many as 5 eligible players involved in a league match between the Old Harrovians and the Old Etonians. There were plenty of good competitive matches but in the end Matthew Wiseman and James Toop outclassed the rest of the field and won comfortably in the final despite some spirited play from Seb Cooley and Will Sorrell. Ed Sanderson and Colin Wilson won the Plate competition effortlessly by keeping warm and staying longer than the rest.

Jack Gaywood (1914-2000)

Jack Gaywood was, for many years, Honorary Secretary of the Old Cholmeleian Fives Club, later President, a member of the EFA Committee and at one time the EFA's Honorary Auditor. He was also a Jester.
