2014 EFA Trophy Qualifiers: Harrow to the rescue
The qualifying rounds of the 2014 EFA Trophy took place at Harrow yesterday and produced a highly enjoyable day's Fives, with eight teams taking part and a huge number of close matches played. The final pair of the final match eventually determined who made it through to the semi-finals on Sunday 2nd March and it will be Old Salopians v Old Wulfrunians and Aldenham v Oxford University to see who makes it through to the final.

The qualifying rounds for the EFA Trophy are always one of the highlights of the Fives Calendar and a beautifully sunny day at Eton on Sunday saw eight teams battle it out to make it into the last four of this year's competition. This was most definitely Fives at its best - competitive yet friendly, with players from 12 to 70+ playing a large number of matches in all sorts of different combinations and all having a thoroughly enjoyable time doing so.

The football team may find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Premier League after a 5-0 home thrashing at the hands of Manchester United, but pride was restored as the town's other major sporting team won the EFA Trophy for the second time in three years at Highgate.

2011 EFA Trophy Qualifiers
Always one of the highlights of the Fives calendar, the EFA Trophy qualifying rounds took place yesterday. With 13 teams entered again this year, the tournament had to be split between two venues, with one group playing at Eton and the other at Harrow. In the end, it was the four top seeds who made it through to the semi-finals in three weeks time, but there was much more to the day's Fives than just the question of who qualified.

The EFA Trophy was won this year for the first time by the Old Wulfrunians, who beat Berkhamsted 2-1 in the final at Eton.

A grand total of 12 teams and 76 players took part in the qualifying rounds of the EFA Trophy, the largest entry for a long time and one which comfortably kept all 16 courts occupied all day.

This year's EFA Trophy saw a pleasing entry of ten teams and produced the highest overall standard of Fives I have seen in this competition in recent years. Particularly noteworthy was the return to the competitive Fives circuit of the Old Wulfrunians, inspired by the enthusiasm of Mark Yates, whose team list read like a Who's Who of Schoolboy Fives from the 80s and 90s.

The pools rounds took place this year on Sunday 28th February at Eton. A solid turnout saw two pools of five compete for the much coveted team trophy cup. Pool A consisted of the Old Salopians, Berkhamsted, St Olave's A, North Oxford B, and the Old Olavians. Pool B comprised Cambridge University, St Olave's B, Westway, Brigands and North Oxford A.
